Top Technology Challenges in Human Systems Integration Speaker Elaine M. Thorpe Location The Boeing Company RSVPRSVP by May 8. Abstract This presentation covers the waterfront of technical challenges in the area of Human Systems Integration (HSI) in the aerospace industry. The presentation will explore Operator Interface design from its traditional focus on ergonomics and cockpit “knob & dial design” to the difficult problems that challenge HSI practitioners today. Topics include information and knowledge management, balancing situation awareness with human workload and performance constraints, expanding mission complexity on shrinking crew complements, and software modeling of human behavior. Biography Elaine Thorpe is a Boeing Technical Fellow in the area of HSI. She leads the HSI Functional Skill Team, which seeks to define common processes, products, tools, and training for HSI engineers across the Boeing Enterprise. Elaine also serves as a technology scout for the Global Technology organization, which reports to the Boeing Chief Technology Officer. Elaine has worked at Boeing for 22 years, providing operator interface support to Integrated Defense Systems, Commercial Airplanes, and Phantom Works programs. She is currently assigned to the C-130 Avionics Modernization Program Advanced Design group. Elaine holds an M.S. degree in Industrial Engineering/Human Factors from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and a B.S. degree in Psychology Sciences from Buffalo State College. Elaine enjoys playing music and tennis, and developing a pistachio orchard with her family. |
