TRIZ: The Ultimate Systems Engineering Tool

Abstract

TRIZ (the Russian acronym for the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving) is a unique knowledge-based technology for generating new concepts in innovation. The power of TRIZ is based on utilizing trends of the evolution of successful systems and generalization of the ways used to solve problems in the most innovative inventions.

TRIZ has revealed and described the common trends in the evolution of many successful systems. These trends provide an understanding of product development, point to opportunities to accelerate the product development cycle, and provide a reliable technological base for road mapping of improvements of a current product or replacement of it with a next-generation products. The trends of evolution also provide you with an advantage in formulating the best opportunities for improving your system.

TRIZ analysis of an innovative situation has integrated system approach, function analysis and TRIZ function modeling. In problem formulation and problem solving, TRIZ aims to maximize utilization of the resources of the product or process, its super system and environment.

TRIZ classifies innovative problems into six classes and offers the application of a series of guidelines for the generation of solution alternatives for each class of problems. Biography

Zinovy Royzen is a Master of TRIZ certified by Genrich Altshuller, the creator of TRIZ. He is the founder and President of TRIZ Consulting, Inc., Seattle, Washington, the first U.S. company to apply TRIZ, cofounder and Vice President of Altshuller Institute for TRIZ Studies and affiliate associate professor of University of Washington, Seattle.

Royzen Zinovy has been applying TRIZ to new product development, quality improvement, cost reduction, and inventive problem solving in innovation since 1980. He has been developing and teaching contemporary TRIZ since 1984.

He has led workshops and/or provided consultation at numerous organizations, including Boeing Co., Eastman Kodak, Ford Motor Company, Hewlett-Packard, Illinois Tool Works, Kimberly-Clark, Lexmark International Inc., LG Electronics, Lucent Technologies Inc., NASA, Paccar, Philips Semiconductors Hamburg, Samsung, Thiokol Corporation, Western Digital Corporation, Weyerhaeuser Company, and Xerox.

He has taught more than 500 engineers at The Boeing Co. alone. The Boeing Co. credited his TRIZ training and TRIZ solutions developed in class to 767 Tanker Transport Project as critical in winning 8 orders worth $1,500 million from the governments of Italy and Japan. He is a MS in mechanical engineering, the author of many TRIZ papers and holds 27 patents.
